WTF is Pacespace?
Pacespace is an app that helps you relax. It does that by connecting your breath and your heartbeat, creating a state of coherence. Pacespace is developed by Konstantin Kaiser.
How does it work?
- Pacespace measures and analyses your heartrate and prompts you to breath regularly.
- By using a few algorithms it caculates the regularity of your breaths and generates a score.
- This coherence score guides you towards better more regular breathing.
Development status
Currently I am developing a proof of concept, using an Arduino board and a Pulsesensor.
My goal is to launch a native mobile application, since using the camera of a smartphone is totally viable to measure your heartrate. A mobile app will increase reach to test acceptance and see how people enjoy the idea.
As of now, this is a one person project, only being worked on at night.
What is Coherence Breathing?
Coherence breathing, is a simple breathing technique that focuses on slowing down your breathing to a specific, steady rate. Typically, this involves 6 breaths per minute, which is slower than the average breathing rate. Here's a bit more about it and its benefits:
- How It Works: In coherence breathing, you usually inhale and exhale for an equal amount of time, often around 5 seconds each. This slow, rhythmic breathing is believed to synchronize the heart, lungs, and blood pressure rhythms.
- Benefits:
- Reduces Stress: By activating the body's relaxation response, it helps in reducing stress.
- Improves Heart Health: It can improve heart rate variability (HRV), which is an indicator of cardiovascular health.
- Enhances Emotional Control: Regular practice may help in managing emotions better, leading to improved mood and anxiety reduction.
- Improves Cognitive Function: Some studies suggest it can enhance focus, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
- Better Sleep: It may help in improving sleep quality by promoting relaxation.
- Boosts Immune System: There's evidence that such breathing practices can strengthen the immune system.
It's quite simple and can be done almost anywhere, making it a convenient method for managing stress and improving overall well-being. As with any new practice, it's often a good idea to start slowly and see how your body responds. And, if you have any health concerns, it's always wise to consult with a healthcare professional before starting a new exercise or breathing routine.
